Ennio Calabria, exponent of European figurativism, was born in Tripoli in 1937. After obtaining his artistic maturity, he studied atAcademy of Fine Arts of Rome. At his first solo exhibition in 1958 he attracted the attention of critics. He is among the most significant painters of the generation that emerged between 1950 and 1960. His painting is inserted in the historical and social context of his era and is autobiographical and socially oriented. In 1963 together with other painters (Hold on) founded the group The pros and cons, a point of reference for new figurative research in Italy in the period of the informal market. There are many prizes and recognitions that the artist receives during his artistic career, as well as the exhibitions and reviews in which he participates, such as the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial. He also takes care of the illustrations for volumes of poetry, short stories and book covers. He produced around 90 posters: Orlando Furioso by Luca Ronconi; ARCI, League for Cooperatives, UISP, CGIL, CISL, PCI, women's movement, Basso Foundation, all works that have often sparked debates in Italy and around the world. His works are present in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, The Pushkin Museum in Moscow and the Gucci collection. He lives and works in Rome.
